'Sup bruv, I'm LIKE Lank Amped OMG, So Epic, it's gonna be a Fat jol!

We all know fashion trends come and go, and that it is seen as the norm... But, have you noticed how we as individuals go through phases of random words or collections of words? Almost like a form of slang... Thanks to technology we have developed at such a rapid pace that it is no longer: "Send me a message", but "BBM me". These words create a form of acceptance and common interest...

I often wonder how these words start and find it amazing how they catch on, and before you know it, the stranger standing in line in front of you at the Spar is saying the word that you started using a few months ago...

A few of these slang words/ sayings include:
- "Lank"
- "Amped"
- "And he's LIKE and I'm LIKE"
- "OMG"
- "Sick"/ "Kiff"
- "Dis MAL" (Afrikaans) and "Mad" (English)
- "What's your buzz?"
- "What's Klappin?"
- "Stoked" or "Super stoked"
- "Off the hook"
- "Epic" and "Epic fail"
- "Awe"
- "Fat jol"
- "Hey Bruv"
- "Such a Murry"
- "Mooi"
- "That's so filth"
- "Konyn'tjie"
- "He klanks hey"
- " 'Sup?"

And one of the up-and-coming ones to listen out for... "That's so bread". So the next time you're standing in a queue, listen carefully to what the person in front of you is saying... You never know, it may be the next word to catch on to :)

Thanks to South African artists such as Jack Parow and Die Antwoord, we can make reference to their slang words and sayings...

Leave me a comment by adding your own "slang word"... It should be AWESOME!! :p

Wedding cake-in-the-middle-of-the road...

I absolutely love baking! One of my favourite reality series which can be found on the Discovery channel is called Cake Boss. It's about an Italian baker (Buddy) who owns a bakery - Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey. The bakery has been in his family for years and years and was passed down to him by his father. You have never seen cakes quite as amazing as these. Think way bigger and better than Charlie's Bakery. They create cakes which look like real objects, but each part of the cake is edible. Every episode consists of two clients whom require cakes for some or other occasion. There is no limit to the size of the cake, except for the fact that it needs to be able to fit through the exit door of the bakery. A lot of these cakes are extremely fragile and I often find myself closing one eye in the fear that the cake may fall or break in the middle of the road while transporting it to the delivery van.

Buddy - the owner of Carlo's bakery

I have, however, never seen them drop a cake, but on their way to a delivery, a piece of a cake has fallen in or crumbled inside of the delivery van. Luckily, they are always prepared for any accidents.

An entire car made from cake, amazing!

One of my dreams is to go to Hoboken and visit Carlo's bakery. I would love to be able to work there and learn the art of cakes. Carlo's bakery truly has mastered the art of the perfect cake, no matter what shape, size or style!
Yes, this is in fact a cake.

THE BLACK PEARL*

So ever since I 'moved' to Cape Town to study, I have been 'teased' about my hometown, Paarl. However, this has not upset me, because I know what a special town it is... It's my home, my real home.

I moved to Paarl at the age of one, so have spent my entire life growing up there. Paarl is a small town situated in the Western Cape, approximately 60km from Cape Town. It is surrounded by the most beautiful mountains which are filled with widespread greenery in the form of farms... I was fortunate enough to have had the best of both worlds. When we moved to Paarl, my dad bought a farm and there I spent 10 years growing up amongst the greenery of a variety fruit trees and some wild life... Living the dream life any kid would want - lots of space to play and go absolutely CRAZY! :p We then moved to town and have been living there ever since.

People may joke and say it's such a small town and that nothing goes on there, but if you have lived there for your entire life, you would know that it truly is a black pearl. It is such a unique town, filled with so much character. Paarl is filled with friendly and outgoing people, always wanting to start a conversation or joke of some sort - just to make you smile. If a crisis strikes the town, each person is willing to help where they can. So everybody may know everybody's business, but it wouldn't be the same if no one cared.

Besides the community, Paarl is filled with exciting things to do... There are a variety of wine farms and restaurants which are always buzzing. The Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is the perfect location for all the mountain biking extremists, hiking fanatics, picnic lovers and of course the outdoor live concerts which take place throughout the year. To me, just being able to wake up to the beautiful scenery every morning is enough to make me never want to be any place else. It's the perfect place to breath in the freshest air and escape from the crazy city life...

Even though Cape Town has stolen a piece of my heart, Paarl will always be my true home, where I feel the love the most.

The Black Pearl and its town :)

I bet you didn't know this...Paarl:
- is the third-oldest town in South Africa.
- is named after the great granite rocks that loom above the town (which looks like a pearl).
- has the longest main road in South Africa - 12km
- is famous for having the world's second largest rock outcrops.
- hosted a match from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003.
- has the only monument in the world dedicated to language (Afrikaans) - Afrikaanse Taalmonument.

The Afrikaanse Taalmonument.

Need I say more? The picture speaks for itself... :)

It is a poor idea to lie to yourself...

Personally, I would have to agree with this statement. However, it is not always as easy to be 100% honest with ourselves, 100% of the time...

I wouldn't call it direct lying, but more like comforting ourselves. This comforting only takes place with not so significant things. A typical example which I'm sure all girls can relate to would include: me craving a chocolate and after much resistance, I give in to the many temptations which surround me... Once the craving is satisfied, I tend to tell myself: "that chocolate won't do anything, I'll just gym extra hard tonight". However, I know that it is not always the case, and the more we "lie" to ourselves about the smallest things, the faster they catch up to us. This counts for all things we lie to ourselves about, not only the chocolate which will cause us to gain weight...

As we grow older, we learn which things are okay to lie to ourselves about and which aren't. I learn which things aren't okay every day, that's what makes it the interesting part of growing up... :)

Dream a little dream...

So ever since we were little, we were constantly asked the question: "what do you want to be when you grow up?" I grew up on a farm and this answer changed throughout the years. We had two maids who used to clean and look after my sister and I. I used to watch how they clean and always be eager to help. I was convinced that I wanted to be a cleaning lady when I grew up. One day I asked Sophie if I could help her with the ironing. She warned me that I would burn, but begged her until she said yes... Finally I got the chance and guess what happened? I burnt my arm... (That was the end of that dream job).

I took ballet from the age of 4, and then decided that I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. However, after many many years of fighting with my mom because of the itchy stocking and jerseys we were required to wear in winter, I decided that I had enough of being itchy and changed my views of that job...

I went through many other options such as wanting to be an artist, a vet, a chef, an event planner and a variety of other jobs. However, as time passed and I needed to decide on my future, I decided to invest in the public relations profession... This is not my dream job, that much I have realised, but I do not regret the past 3/ almost 4 years. I have learnt a lot and believe one can never have enough knowledge about anything...

I still have dream jobs and dreams that I know I will succeed in one day. A few of my dreams include: owning my own restaurant/ deli, owning the best bakery in town, having my own event company, and having my own fashion label where I design clothes, shoes and handbags... Each day brings new dreams. I want to travel the world before I settle down in one place and live life and all the experiences that go with it. I believe we should all have dreams, that's what keeps us going and motivated to succeed in life!

The sound of ONE hand clapping

Simply put, to me, the sound of a one hand clap is similar to the sound of failure. My biggest fears in life are disappointment and failure... Therefore, I fear the sound of one hand clapping, which is also the sound of silence and disapproval...

Not all who wander are lost*

This is very similar saying to a quote by J.R.R Tolkien who says: "Not all those who wander are lost". It forms part of a longer quote where he says: "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring; renewed shall be blade that was broken, the crownless again shall be king." It's a quote from his book, The Lord of the Rings.

For the purpose of this blog, I will be focusing on the beginning part which states: "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost...". Here he implies that even though something is made of gold, it may not glitter. Here I understand the statement as follows: even though someone may be wealthy, they may not necessarily be happy. They may be hiding unhappiness, pain, depression etc. This comes down to the statement that money cannot buy you happiness. Some may agree with this and others may disagree. I am one who believes that money is not the route to happiness, but more likely the route to evil. Even though being financially well off  makes life easier in the current era, it cannot buy you friends, love or pure happiness for that matter. I also find that too much money can make a person shallow and only see the material things in life, when there are so many other amazing natural things that God has created. Those are often looked passed and it's so sad to see. This is not the matter with all people, however, it has been seen all too often.

The second part of the quote says: "not all those who wander are lost". I interpret this as saying that even though people may seem to look as if they have no direction, it does not mean that they are lost and do not have a destination. They may be in the process of finding their way to reaching their destination/ goal in life. I am a firm believer that most of us are wanderers. We all know what we want to achieve in life, but the road to getting there is not always as easy as we'd hope it would be. Life throws us all sorts of obstacles, and it's our job to overcome them in order to reach our destinations.

Getting back to my topic... That is why I agree when J.R.R Tolkien says: "not all those who wander are lost". I believe that we all have destinations and are therefore all wanderers in life, ever looking for the right paths in order to reach our destinations.

Stampeeeeede!!!!

So my sis and I have been attending a class at gym for a couple of weeks now. It's a hectic workout, but so much fun...Well, we tend to think so. There is however one small problem which I find myself still struggling to overcome. A stampede by the rudest women out there...

The class takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at either 17h30 or 18h30. Depending on the time, we always arrive at least 20 minutes early to ensure we get a spot (It's a really popular class). Anyway, all the women tend to hover over the door and you even get the really weird and rude ones that push in front of you. My sis and I just laugh it off, but it's actually very sad. If it's not enough that they push in front of us (just to be 2mm closer to the door), the minute the class before ours ends and the door opens, they all stampede into the room. The poor women from the previous class do not even have a chance at exiting the room. So that's when I changed the 'pattern' and as we approached the door, I stood back, and allowed the woman (who was waiting so patiently), to exit. I couldn't help but wonder, what have the stampede women proven? Well I don't think I'll ever know, but its still a little irritation of mine.

Then, the poor instructor (a male and very much full of life), tries real hard to make the class fun by throwing out a couple of comments every now and then... He uses phrases like: "Use those Lady Gaga Arms ladies", or "let's get rid of all those unwanted visitors, especially with Easter coming up". My sis and I can't help but smile and giggle, 'cause the poor guy is just trying to make the class smile. Unfortunately we seem to be the only two that find him amusing. The other ladies are such sour cats and it's as if it's their mission to be miserable. But, that won't stop us from attending the class. We still look forward to every Tuesday and Thursday. :) So, if you're in the mood for some hard work with good music and an amusing instructor, be sure to check out the Body Conditioning class at Wembley, Virgin Active... Hopefully you'll be a happy chappy and not a sour cat ;)

This is me*

Earlier this year I had to write a blog with the title "I am". Even though it has only been around 9 weeks since the start of my blogging adventures, I still feel the same as I did at the beginning, with a few exceptions... Here goes...

I recently came across a quote which I very much agree with: "Never mind searching for who you are. Search for the person you aspire to be" ~ Robert Brault. Even though I have a good idea as to who I am, we are all continuously developing ourselves into the people we want to become.

No matter what life throws at me, I believe in building a bridge, and getting over it (Excuse the cliche). Life is way too short to worry about petty things and I therefore like sorting issues out as soon as possible. I consider myself an honest, reliable person with good morals which I try my best to live by. I am a loyal friend and good listener. I cry easily - I am very much in touch with my emotions (as is my mom and sis), and believe it makes me the passionate, caring person I am. If I had to choose a colour that would best describe me, I would have to say it would be... Grey - not in the sense of being dull, but because there is no such thing as black and white with me - I tend to over complicate things and struggle to make decisions. I over-think everything, but it helps me make good decisions in the long run. While on the topic, grey is my favourite colour. It gives me a sense of calmness and if you opened my cupboard you would find piles of grey items and very few bright colours. The bright colours would come in the form of flowers (for my hair), I am obsessed with all kinds :)

I love animals, my family, friends and boyfriend. I don't believe my life would be possible without them and they have helped create the person I am today. I have a passion for food (whether it be cooking or eating, I am obsessed). I love fashion and shopping and hope that my career one day will entitle me to an unlimited wardrobe allowance :) I love the outdoors - even though I do not spend as much time outside as I would like, I admire all the beauty God has created. I love exercising as well as dancing, but prefer to do it at home or amongst a large group of my friends. I'm not too keen on being the centre of attention ;) I love movies and believe that no movie is complete without popcorn and a machine coke (large, hehe).

I hate negativity and despise fakeness and dishonesty. I can never understand why you would want to portray some one you're not and lie about things that will only catch up to you sometime or another. My biggest fear is disappointing the people around me who I care dearly about, which is why I try my best to do everything in life to my fullest potential.

I believe that love is the most precious thing in life and that it should never be taken for granted, which is why you should always let the people you love in your life know that you do (love them). That is why I never let one phone, sms or face-to-face conversation go by without saying: 'I love you'. Some people may find it strange, but I would never want the people I love, not knowing how much I love them.

I have not yet discovered everything about myself in life, but this is what I know for now... I also know who I want to be (those are the pieces still missing) and I look forward to the journey I am embrace daily to become the person I want to be in the end...

Fashion icon - Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel

I absolutely love reading about famous fashion designers (specifically the older ones). Coco Chanel is one of my favourites. She was a pioneering French fashion designer whose menswear-inspired and pursuit of expensive simplicity made her a very important fashion figure in the 20th century.

Coco opened a millinery shop in 1912 which lasted until the 1920s. She then rose to become one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, France, and was known for replacing the corset with comfort and casual elegance. Her themes included simple suits and dresses, women's trousers, costume jewelry, perfume and textiles.

There are a couple of quotes by Coco Chanel that I love and one can look at them as pieces of fashion advice as well as lessons in life to follow. They are timeless...

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening"

"Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury"

"Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions"

"Fashion has become a joke. The designers have forgotten that there are women inside the dresses. Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must be able to move, to get into a car without bursting their seams! Clothes must have a natural shape."

"Where should one use perfume? a young women asked. "Wherever one wants to be kissed." I said."

"I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny."

"Since everything is in our heads, we had better not lose them."

[The last one is specifically aimed at all the PR Btech's of 2011, don't lose it guys! ;) ]

How do you step from the top of a 100-foot pole?

So I've just dozed off and the next thing I feel is a sudden shock and I fall from the top of a 100-foot pole! No matter what the surface is that you are stepping or jumping off, it happens to us all. However, we always wake up just before we hit the surface you're about to hit...

This phenomenon has been documented by a variety of researchers, however still not sure as to why it happens. Most of them agree that it is a natural part of the sleeping process. The general agreement among researchers is that it happens when your muscles go into a restful state as you are in the process of falling asleep, your brain then senses the relaxation signals and misinterprets them (which leaves you thinking you are falling down). The brain then sends the signals to the muscles in the arms and legs in an attempt to jerk you back upright. The misinterpretation that takes place in your brain may also be responsible for the "falling" dreams which accompany the falling sensation. These 'dreams' aren't normal dreams and are more like a daydream or hallucination in a response to the body's sensations (That Strange feeling, 2008).

Apparently, Falling dreams often reflect a sense of failure or inferiority in some situation. It may be the fear of failing in your job, failing in school, loss of status, or failure in love. You feel shameful and a lost sense of self-esteem. (Dream moods, 2011). There are so many different theories and opinions as to what these dreams mean, but it has not yet been proven.

They say that you will never hit the surface while falling, as you will always wake up in a fright before you do. They also say that if you don't wake up and you hit the surface, you die. Apparently, it is only a myth and I don't know if there is a possibility that there is truth in it. However, there are so many possible chances of everything in life, and if it has happened to some one, we would never know, as they would not have lived to tell the tale... scary!

Girls' Night Out (@ Nu Metro)

Last week my sis decided to book a movie (No Strings Attached) - for her and I to go see. Coincidental it was booked for a Thursday night and this was the "Girls' Night Out" promo for the month which takes place monthly at certain Nu Metro cinemas. This means: NO guys allowed!

All we knew was that there were freebies and lucky draws, but didn't realise how much fun the evening would actually be. It all started by us entering the cinema door and receiving freebies such as Maltesers, Davidoff Cool Water perfume samples and lastly a sachet sponsored by Assegai. We also had to complete a form with our names, for the fishbowl for the lucky draw.

Before the movie started, the MC for the evening (a male - can you imagine how intimidating that must be), walked down the cinema stairs, creating a hype in the cinema among all the girls. I must say, women empowerment was really strong here ;)

He had 5 ladies join him on the stairs where they had to take part in a challenge in order to win double tickets to go see any movie of their choice. (Let's just say the challenge was to be kept inside the cinema and involved the Assegai sponsor.)

After the challenge, the lucky draw took place where prizes such as CDs, DVDs, and movie tickets were up for grabs. This may not sound like so much fun, but you actually had to be there to experience the vibe and the comedian element which the MC brought in. He was so funny and had us all laughing non-stop.

It was then time for the movie and what an amazing movie it was. 'No Strings Attached' has to be my all-time favourite romantic-comedy at the moment. It had us laughing and smiling, with only a few tears throughout the movie. A real 'feel-good' movie and perfect for a girls' night out :)

Nu Metro cinemas has definitely created a promotion which I think is a great success. So if you're feeling like some girly time and need to escape the male specimen for a couple of hours, be sure to book your ticket for the next "Girls' Night Out" taking place on the 14th of April 2011 where you can enjoy the release of "Water for Elephants" with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. My ticket will be booked :)

"Waka waka" - Time for Africa?

A few days ago, I watched an old-time Afrikaans movie called "Orkney Snork Nie". I don't know how many of you know it, but it was originally a popular Afrikaans sitcom which was broadcasted by the SABC between 1989 and 1992, and then produced 2 movies. I was really young when I watched it, but the series and movies have been repeated over a number of years and I still enjoy them every time I watch them. It's ridiculously funny.

Anyway, getting back to my point... The last part of the movie plays out on an island where the oldest couple is celebrating their honeymoon which they never had. All their children then join them later and once they are all together, their youngest daughter says: "Let's do the Waka Waka" and they then sing and dance to the Waka Waka song. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes. The first time I had ever heard this song was during the 2010 FIFA World Cup which took place in South Africa and was by Shakira and Freshly Ground. After watching the movie, I decided to do some research on the matter...

I found out that the World Cup song was actually based on a traditional African soldiers' song sung by a Cameroonian group called Golden Sounds in 1986. I then watched the video via Youtube of the original song and saw that it was very similar, if not identical to the Waka Waka song which is reported to be written by Shakira and John Hill. According to the Hubpages site, at the time that Shakira released the song, the Golden Sounds group leader, Ze Bella received a phone call from an acquaintance in France who informed him that Shakira had just released a version of their song, "Zangalewa". Even though he was proud that a world famous icon had remixed their song as the World Cup anthem, they at least expected to be properly credited and adequately compensated. After this, FIFA, Sony and Shakira had apparently come to an out of court settlement amount and all sides were happy.

During the World Cup, I felt that this song brought our country and the world together. It was such a catchy tune, and you could just feel the fantastic vibe which the song brought. At first I had difficulty accepting that Shakira was the person who represented this song for the "South African" World Cup, as I felt that it would have been a great opportunity to have let a South African artist sing it. However, it worked and everyone loved it. I now feel upset and almost hurt, knowing that this was a 'stolen' song and that nothing was said (that I had heard) about it during the World Cup.

Anyway, the World Cup has come and gone and I still look back at it being an amazing opportunity which our country underwent. I miss the vibe and buzz in Cape Town and hope that one day, we will have the opportunity to host something as big as a World Cup again and then have local artists only representing the anthems/ songs.

We are what we do*

Most of the time I would agree with this statement, however, what about the time where you have just met someone and the things you do or say are seen in the wrong light or misunderstood, and that is how the person perceives you to be?

Life is a funny thing. There are so many varieties of people and personalities, it is impossible to always be 100% understood by others. We are not always able to portray the person we are perfectly to others, all the time.

Once you get to know a person and form a strong relationship with them, I would then say that 'you are what you do'. For example, if you are someone who enjoys getting completely smashed and dancing half naked on tables in public places (and acting slutty), it shows what kinds of morals and values you have for yourself. I believe that we act according to our morals and values and that is how you can see what kind of person you are. These actions portray who you are, and therefore it can be said that: 'we are what we do'.
